An hour at the Hepworth Wakefield

Is most certainly not enough, but all I had on my way up to York for the weekend, so make use of that hour I did.

Set back off the main road I would have missed it had there not been signs from the clearly marked car park. But the building is incredibly impressive as you walk towards it over the river.

As well as an homage to the magnificence that is Barbara Hepworth, this gallery also celebrates other artists. My first stop was the British Surrealists where I was particularly drawn in by the framing. An eclectic mix of styles + textures and all against an atmospheric wall.

In fact that wasn’t the only area of the gallery where the framing stood out, this concrete frame part of the art itself greets you as you enter.

But of course where the gallery truly sings is in the exhibiting of the Hepworths. As you walk through the gallery it opens up and what greets you is not only the art but the outside world itself. I was, and I saw other visitors too, drawn to gaze out the windows as much as at the sculptures, an accident I think not. The sculptures and art grander and more breath taking as you wander through past the rustling leaves and rushing water. So often you emerge from a gallery a little tired and squinting at the natural light you’ve been missing for the past few hours, but here I walked out feeling lighter.

And this quote and array on the table made me feel a certain something, I could not agree with her more.
