How to create a gallery wall.
From someone who can never make up their darn mind.
You have a blank wall and a pile of picture frames full of photos and prints that have been stacked up in the hall way for months. Same. There’s so much in the way of getting frames to wall. Hammers aside, how on earth do we decide where they go? Living up to the seemingly perfectly curated walls of art in galleries brings us to a standstill.
Tip One.
We’ve got to start somewhere. So let’s just put one frame up. Without any other thoughts or decisions, just take one frame and get it on the wall. It’s an anchor, we can go from there. Feel free to leave it there for a day or so. You’ve left the pile of frames there for months, leave it there alone for a week!
Tip Two.
Now this is where we could get out the brown paper, the ruler, the pencil, but I just head right. Bang another nail in, and then decide which frame should go next to the first. And then do the same below.
Maybe at this point you might lose your nerve and get out the brown paper, that’s fine, at least this got you started.
From here you’re on your own, but I do have a couple of things to consider.
Tip Three.
Don’t be afraid to GO LOW.
Tip Four.
And then experiment. Move them around. Play with the heights, still using the existing nails you’ve hammered in. Leave them up for a day or two. Now I know this framed tea towel hits differently in the early morning light.
Tip Five.
Finally, rope someone in to help. Someone to hold them up until their arms ache + tolerate a bit of “lower”, “bit higher” etc.
Good luck. It will all be fine. And if it’s not, there is always filler.
